8th East Kent (Buffs) were part of 17 Brigade, 24th Division which, in January 1916, moved to Ypres and the trenches of the salient there. The winter of 1915/1916 had been both cold and wet and the trenches were in a very poor condition which was not helped by the enemy artillery bombardment of them which destroyed parapets, blocked communication trenches and generally made life even more unbearable for the infantry. Edward Perkins was killed in action on 19th January, 1916, but as yet we have no further information concerning his death.
